Trade

United States trade policy should be good for Americans. I'm not an expert in trade matters.  I cannot see how NAFTA or GATT have been good for our country. Our manufacturing base has eroded, putting our national defense at risk.  I oppose jeopardizing our nations sovereignty through the World Trade Organization (WTO).

I believe our economy benefits from high levels of trade. American workers and American products can out produce those of ANY other country. BUT, we cannot compete on an uneven playing field. A fair trade policy would reflect the trading partners policy.  If Japan tags our products with a 10% tariff, we should tag their products with a 10% tariff.  I know this over simplifies issues of wage disparities and regulation problems, but in general refer to the Golden Rule - "Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you."
